MATURE SKIN
As the skin ages it loses elasticity and its ability to retain moisture and sign of ageing appear, including sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles. The emphasis of skin care is on nourishing and moisturising the skin to reduce the effects ot the ageing process. Regenerative herbs suitable for mature skin include rose, comfrey, marshmallow and marigold. Essential oils include olibanum, myrrh, rose, palmarosa, lavender and neroli.
COMBINATION SKIN
The face may have an oily section usually a panel down the centre including the forehead, nose and chin, and areas of drier skin. You may find it best to treat the centre panel as oily skin and use different products for the drier areas, or use products that are balaning and recommended for normal skin. Balancing herbs include rose, lavender,and elderflower. Essential oils include geranium, ylang ylang, bergamot and lavender.
SENSITIVE SKIN
This type is usually dry and prone to flaking, itching and redness. There may be a tendency to allergic reactions and also to broken capillaries. Exposure to strong sunlight and drinking alcohol will tend to make things worse. Cleansing should be a very gentle process and soothing and cooling moisturiser should be used. It is advisable to avoid the use of exfoliants, astringent toners and any products containing alcohol or fragrance. Soothing and anti-inflammatory herbs include chamomile, comfrey, marigold, chickweed and marchmallow. Essentail oils include chamomile Roman chamomile, lavender and rose.
DRY SKIN
Dry skin tends to be delicate and susceptible to flaking and fine lines. It can taut across the face, especially after cleansing. You should never use soap on dry skin; Other things that can exacerbate dryness are alcohol, exposure to the sun, central heating and wind. Gentle cleansing and careful moisturising are a must. Herbs that are suitable for dry skin includes chamomile, rose, comfrey, marshmallow and marigold. Essential oils include chamomile, jasmine, neroli, palmarosa, rose and sandalwood.
PROBLEM SKIN
This is skin that is prone to blackheads, acne,and spots. It is often oily, although not necessarily so. The most important factors here are diet, to help the skin with its eliminative process, and thorough yet gentle cleansing. if acne is severe, consulting a professional therapist of natural medicine may be necessary to get the best results. Antiseptic and healing herbs include marigold, eucalyptus, yarrow, comfrey and elderflower. Essential oils include grapefruit, juniper, tea tree, lavender and bergamot. The use of clays for deep cleansing can also be very beneficial. |
